The Department for Education does not have a central guidelines on school uniforms and religious items. It is down to individual headteachers to set their school’s policy. However the headteacher of Redscope Primary school in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was forced to write to parents and reassure them that kirpans were “religious ornaments” and not weapons
